University of Nevada, Reno dorms open Thursday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m., vendor fair and activities offered

RENO, Nev. – This Thursday, 2,200 more students will begin their move to campus, often accompanied by family and friends, which will create a bustling scene at the University. More than 400 students have already settled into their rooms within nine undergraduate residence halls at the University of Nevada, Reno. This last weekend, NevadaFIT, an academic preparation program, welcomed 350 freshmen to campus. Band members and some athletes also joined in the move Sunday.

Residence halls begin check-in Thursday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. as students haul their belongings into their new living quarters and prepare for Monday’s first day of classes for the fall semester. Fall 2014 Move in Day

There are 2,600 students assigned to the undergraduate residence halls this fall. To meet demand, rooms in Argenta Hall remain converted from doubles to triples, and Juniper Hall rooms remain at double occupancy versus single occupancy.

For the first time ever, the University was unable to accommodate all residence hall requests. To keep up with the increasing demand for on-campus student housing – currently exceeding 115 percent – the University is building a new residence hall, Peavine Hall, which broke ground in spring. Peavine Hall, located on North Sierra Street, will provide an additional 400 beds to the residence hall system and primarily house freshmen. Additionally, Manzanita Hall and Lincoln Hall will no longer be used to house students in fall 2015. Peavine Hall will help to absorb the student capacity lost by taking these two residence halls offline.

While the University’s fall 2014 enrollment numbers will be finalized in September, following the “add/drop” deadline, fall 2014 enrollment will surpass 19,000 students. Last year, the University welcomed its largest enrollment ever, with 18,776 undergraduate and graduate students.

WHO: 2,200 students will move into residence halls. University officials will be available for interviews. University President Marc Johnson will welcome students and parents to campus from 10-11 a.m. near the vendor fair.
